How much of an image is in focus.

A short depth of field would have a very limted distance between what is in focus and what is out (e.g. A girl's face is in focus but her soda can is not). A long depth of field would mean that almost the entire image would be in focus (e.g. a person an the moutaintain behind them are all in focus).
