The act of putting data onto a disk, such as CD or DVD, by passing a laser beam across the surface and perminently changing the data layer. This takes time because it requires the laser to pass over all the data rings on the disk. This process is different from the "pressing" of a Glass Master.

One way to think of the difference is that Burning is like a photocopier and Pressing is like a printing press.
