The first rough cut of a piece where the takes are placed in proper sequential order with minimal timing adjustment.

I guess, techincally, an "assemble edit" referes to the process of adding one clip after another in a linear edit. However, such a definition seems redudant because a linear edit requires that you preform an assemble edit.
