Avid is truly "the" industry standard for editing. However, it has lost a lot of ground to Final Cut and Premiere as they have become more viable.
Avid has a complete (albeit extremely limited) trial version of their software available for download: Avid Free DV. Well, available until September 1, 2007... at which point this is all pointless.
